Function of the fuel filter
The presence of rust, sand, dust, wax crystals and water in the fuel of an internal combustion engine will cause wear and tear to the gear pump and precision couplings of the injectors in the fuel pump. In order to minimise the contaminants in the fuel pump (including the delivery pump and injection pump) and injectors of internal combustion engines, high quality fuel filters are installed in the fuel system of internal combustion engines.
Main performance indicators of fuel filters
1)Filtration efficiency
The number of particles of a certain size removed by the filter element as a percentage of the total number of particles of that size added is called the filtration efficiency of this size;
2) Bubble point pressure
Immerse the filter element in the test oil at the specified depth and internal pressure, and measure the pressure value when the first series of bubbles start to emerge from the filter element assembly.
3)Original resistance and end resistance
The original resistance is the pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the filter of the new cartridge at the rated flow rate.
The working principle of the fuel filter
The diesel fuel pumped out by the oil delivery pump enters the shell through the inlet pipe interface, then penetrates the filter core and enters the inner cavity of the filter element, and finally outputs to the injection pump through the outlet pipe interface, during which the mechanical impurities and dust in the diesel fuel are filtered out and the water is precipitated in the shell to achieve the effect of filtering the diesel fuel.
Fuel filter maintenance
Fuel filters should be changed regularly as they become dirty or even clogged after a certain period of time. The recommended interval for replacing fuel filters is every 16,000 km of operation for cars or on-road vehicles and 250 hours or 6 months for off-road vehicles (whichever comes first).
For filter element replacement, the fuel system should be drained of air after replacement. For spin-on fuel filters (when the fuel system does not have a hand pump), the filter should be filled with the required amount of fuel and then mounted on the filter base to ensure a tight seal.
In the filter replacement process, pay special attention to the exhaust treatment or filter is not filled with fuel on the engine start, otherwise it will cause the engine to burn tile, crankshaft clamping, parts dry friction and wear, damage and a series of serious problems.
The fuel filter is installed on the engine by the fuel filter to complete, in order to make the engine fine filter and fuel pump can have a long service life, should be installed between the fuel pump and the fuel tank a coarse filter. To prevent the coarse filter from throttling the fuel supply, the size of the coarse filter must be matched to three times the full load fuel volume at rated speed.
If the fuel used has a high water content, an oil/water separator should be installed or a filter material with high oil/water separation efficiency should be used and the water should be drained regularly.
